  • Effective February 24, 2021, Animal Care & Control will begin accepting trapped stray/feral cats.  Citizens utilizing humane live traps must make an appointment to drop off the animal with CRACC as the building is still closed to the public.  Appointments can be made by calling 319-286-5993.  Citizens will be asked basic COVID screening questions, be required to wear a mask/face covering, and have their temperature checked with a no-touch thermometer upon arrival. Humane live traps should be used when the temperature falls below 30 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chill factor applied or when the heat index reaches or exceeds 85 degrees. Additionally,  If a citizen has tested postitive, been or potentially been exposed to someone who has tested postitive, or are showing symptoms of COVID, you are asked not to trap until you are considered recovered, and/or have completed self isolation as recommended by current CDC guidelines.

  • Effective January 6, 2021, Animal Care and Control began accepting the owner surrender of animals. Owners will have to call 319-286-5993 to set an appointment or ask any questions about the surrender process.  A $50.00 surrender fee per animal will apply. Surrenders will be approved based on the availability of shelter resources.  Owners will be required to wear a mask and have their temperature checked with a no-touch thermometer.  Animal Care and Control is also asking that owner fill out and sign the surrender form and the dog/cat profile located at http://www.cedar-rapids.org/local_government/departments_a_-_f/animal_control/animal_surrenders.php prior to arrival to minimize the time at the shelter and contact with staff to help mitigate COVID-19.  Animal Care and control is an open admission shelter, and will do what we can to find the animal a new home, but cannot gurantee the adoption of any animal surrendered, and humane euthanasia is a possibility.  All animals will be evaluated for their suitability for adoption based on their medical condition and temperament.  Please exhaust all other avenues to re-home your pet before surrendering the Animal Care and Control.

About Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control

Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control is an "open admission" shelter with a small staff and corps of volunteers who help care for more than 3,000 animals per year. The shelter accepts all animals brought to us from the cities of Cedar Rapids and Marion. We work collaboratively with foster and rescue teams to ensure that our animals are either reunited with their owners or are placed in new, loving homes.

You can view a list of the many wonderful pets we have available for adoption by visiting our PetFinder website at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IA125.html.

Although we do our best to keep current and reliable information on each report and stray animal in our care, we strongly encourage you to personally visit our shelter to look for your lost pet, since only YOU can accurately identify your pet. And we encourage you to visit daily until your pet is found.

Unidentified animals are held for only five days (excluding date of impound and Sundays/holidays) for owner reclaim. Animals that are injured or diseased may be held for a shorter period. Animals that are not claimed within the five-day holding period may be made available for adoption, placed in foster care, or sent to rescue.
